Indian people were quite aware about protecting environment from time immemorial. Vedic age is testimony of this but in modern age especially after independence, the deep urge of economic progress has compromised the importance of environment.
Only after 1972 we witness few steps like establishment of National Committee for environment and forest that later on turned into Environment and forest Ministry. Currently this ministry is known by Environment, Forest and Climate Change. There were not sufficient provision regarding protection of environment from the constitutional development, but after 42nd constitutional amendment, many important provisions were added which clearly expect the protection and promotion of environment.
If human being understands that every act they do, polluting environment silently the rate of pollution may come down. Our mother planet the earth that was containing sufficient resource is now turning vacant. Learning the expectation of future, infact present generation is facing numerous challenge to mead every-day need. We need to take necessary steps that can secure the earth.
Basically environmental education is process by which we make people aware about many environmental issues, that can help them to find solution of challenges of present as well as future. It elucidates the individual and collective approach for evading many ill effect of environmental pollution.
If we really wishing to protect humanity from furious environment, serious study and awareness and environment becomes imperative. Ignoring environmental education will keep many people ignorant of their action and consciousness will not rise, posing-trouble of environmental imbalance.
There should be balance among human development, technological advancement and impact on environment. In case of unequal development, nature fills its require men itself and we witness its negative impact on almost all section if life.
Unfortunately, this trends has increased in recent time. Indiscriminate use of natural resources technological advancement, development of rate and communication has accelerated the depletion of natural resources. Insatiable urge for material progress secretly causing destruction of environment.
Need of environment education can be for following reasons:-
Introducing various dimensions of environment.
Comprehending interdependence of various aspects of environment and its relation with each other.
Impact of environment on human dealing.
Knowing form, causes and impact of environmental pollution.
Highlighting individual and collective responsibility regarding mitigation of environmental pollution.
Elucidating relation between environment and human health.
Raise consciousness about environment and develop positive attitude towards environmental issues.
Promote literacy work spreading awareness about environmental protection and management.
Explain recent research on environmental impact.
Form of environmental education must contribute in making environmental policies and representation of intimate relationship between men and environment. Studying environmental education, must develop the feeling of;
Interest in studying environment should be raised up among middle school and college going students.
They must receive various concept of environment.
Teachers, engineers, politicians and social workers involved in such studies have re-orientation.
At university level students should be given work to study man-environment relationship. They should also prepare report on their respective studies.
At each level students should get chance to raise environmental education and receive training.
Provision regarding environmental education-
After getting direction from Supreme Court, environmental education was started formatting in all schools.
In one of its report, UNESCO tells; education working collectively with Government, civilian and private sector can fulfill the role for sustainable society.
National Education Policy-1986 has also made significant importance of environmental education. Therefore in education field, objectives, process and its new dimension had awareness was felt.
Institutional attempt environmental education and consciousness in India
The Energy and Researches Institute : It is a research based organization, that promotes useful and justifiable development policies for environment. It was formally established is 1974. Its main objective was to struggle with different problems and find out its solution, those problem will get out because of fast depletion of energy houses.
Sulabh International ; This organisation is completely dedicated to Promote human welfare, environmental cleanliness, finding modern methods of energy generation and promote development activities.
Kalpavriksha : It was established in 1979. Its main objective is spreading awareness campaigning and shorting out legislations. Participants are very serious. Visit of various sites like Chipko Movement, protection of wild life animals and securing animals from exploit are major functions of this organization.
Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun established in 1982, is an institution of international reputation. This organization provides training, syllabus and academic programmes. This institution also provides cooperation in Wildlife Research and Management.
Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy was established in Dehradun in 1987. Here forest officer are trained.
Centre for Environmental Education-CEE has been established by Central Department of Environment, Forest and Climate change in 1984. The organization works towards developing programmes and materials to increase awareness about the environment and sustainable development.
National Education Policy-2021 also highlights Environmental Education.
Mobius foundation, is a non-governmental organization announced to establish first environment school to bring attention towards environmental stability.
World Environment School (Kurg) would be first institution of its kind in India and South Asia, completely dedicated to promote environmental education and maintaining development along with environmental pollution.

The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) : It was founded on 15th Sept. 1883, is one of the largest non-governmental organizations in India engaged in conservation and bio-diversity research.
Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) is a premier organization in zoological research and studies. It was established on 1st July 1916 to promote survey, exploration and research leading to the advancement in our knowledge of the various aspects of the exceptionally rich animal life.
National Green Corps is a programme of the Ministry of Environment and Forest of GoI covering around 120000 schools in India with NGC School Eco Clubs.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) : established in 1980, CSE works as a think tank on environment-development issues in India, poor planning, climate shifts devastating India's Sundarbans and advocates for policy changes and better implemtation of the already existing policies.
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) is a research institute created and funded by Govt. of India. NEERI is devoted to research and innovations in environmental science and engineering besides solving a range of problem posed by industry, government and public.
Now many Universities has initiated Bachelor courses in environmental Studies and made it mandatory curriculum. A separate department of environmental studies runs in Delhi University.
